Announcing the new name, purpose and date for Party with a Purpose

January 31, 2012

The Washington Global Health Alliance is pleased to announce the new name for Party with a Purpose is Agency

As the second Party with a Purpose concluded in 2011 with twice the number of attendees as the first event, it became apparent that the party is formalizing an important niche in Seattle: our young community mobilizing to take global health action. We thought critically about how best to reflect our mission of inspiring young people to learn, connect and join the global health movement. After much deliberation, we decided a new, unique name will help our young global health constituents take true ownership of this vision.

“Agency” replaces “Party with a Purpose” as the event’s name, with the goal of establishing a broader platform on which to engage the young community building around global health. Agency means taking action on behalf of others. Agency is founded in the belief that focusing the power of young adults for the betterment of a single global health cause, even just for one night, can lead to world-changing progress. By fostering an environment where young adults can learn, give and participate while having fun, we are building a better world for future generations, one party at a time.

“Mobile Moms” a project of Health Alliance International, a center in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health chosen as 2012 Agency beneficiary

Agency will fund the purchase of 2,000 cell phones and texting plans for pregnant women in Timor Leste, which will expand the impact of HAI’s “Mobile Moms” project.

HAI’s “Mobile Moms” is a USAID-funded project that provides cell phone access to pregnant mothers in remote rural areas of Timor-Leste, a small island country near Australia.  The cell phones will connect the women with their midwives throughout their pregnancy and for six weeks after delivery while they care for their newborns. HAI is developing a set of weekly text messages that will promote a healthy pregnancy, such as reminding the women to have regular prenatal care visits, to eat well, and take their prenatal supplements.  It will also allow them to call the midwife when their labor begins, so they don’t have to give birth at home with only family members to help.

We believe this purpose will resonate with Millenials and we look forward to partnering with HAI to educate and inspire those who attend Agency on July 14, 2012 at McCaw Hall.

About Agency

Agency (formerly Party with a Purpose) is an initiative of the Washington Global Health Alliance aimed at fostering a socially conscious and globally aware community of 20 and 30-somethings in Seattle. Each event thrown by Agency is focused on education and involvement in global health initiatives as well as education and fundraising for a single global health cause. Agency planning is advised by a small group of people in their 20s and 30s from Amazon, Microsoft, Wexley School for Girls, and other companies and non-profits. Agency Advisors select one beneficiary per event from WGHA Executive Members who submit an application.  1,000 Millenials are expected to fill Seattle’s Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, Saturday, July 14, 2012 for Agency 2012. Agency is an official event of Global Health Nexus, which is tied to the Next Fifty, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Seattle’s 1962 World’s Fair.
