VillageReach announces $5.6 million program to strengthen Mozambique health systems

This week VillageReach announced an ambitious initiative to significantly improve the quality of health for the millions of residents living in challenging circumstances in rural Mozambique called Improving the Last Mile for Millions.
VillageReach has committed to a six-year, $5.6 million national program to strengthen the country’s health system. The program will serve as many as 12 million throughout Mozambique by improving the last mile distribution and supervision of vaccines and other medical commodities that health centers administer to young children and mothers on a daily basis.
Like many low-income countries, Mozambique has a weak and poorly resourced health system, with rural health facilities that often employ only one health worker to cover as many 10,000-50,000 people. As a result, the country suffers from one of the world’s highest child mortality rates: for every 1000 live births, 154 children will die before they turn five.
VillageReach is responding. By applying its tested and proven model to provinces throughout the country, VillageReach aims to ensure the right medical commodities reach the right locations in the right quantities at the right time. We’re strengthening a critical part of the health system on which millions of rural Mozambicans rely for their survival.
VillageReach is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with headquarters in Seattle and offices in Mozambique and Malawi. Please share in our vision for better access to healthcare for those who need it most.
