Washington to Washington: A shared vision for global health
TVW is airing this event throughout the month of August
U.S. global health efforts are at an important crossroads. The Obama Administration and U.S. Congress are in the midst of making critical decisions to advance the President's $63 billion Global Health Initiative (GHI), the FY11 budget, and broader foreign aid reform. Meanwhile, Washington State stands at the frontline of U.S. global health activities, with exceptional engagement by industry, foundations, universities, the private sector, and implementers. At this moment there is high value in connecting Washington, DC policymakers with Washington State leaders, provide an update on GHI, and convey Washington State perspectives on how the U.S. should advance its global health agenda.
On July 29th, 2010, Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter, Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. State Deparment, Dana Hyde, Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State, and members of the CSIS Commission on Smart Global Health Policy joined the Washington Global Health Alliance for a landmark event in Seattle, drawing attention to the President's Global Health Initiative. Washington Governor Christine Gregoire discussed the important role global health plays in the state's economy and the equally important responsibility Washington state feels to work for the good health of those around the world. Senator Patty Murray welcomed the audience with filmed remarks where she called out the unique concentration of global health activity and collaboration in Washington. More than two hundred members of the Washington global health community were in attendance.
