Medicine on the Frontiers of Rain Forest Conservation: Healthcare to Heal the Planet
Location: Woodland Park Zoo, ARC West
Woodland Park Zoo Brown Bags presents Dr. Kinari Webb from Health in Harmony's Project ASRI. Health in Harmony and Project ASRI partners with the Gunung Palung Orangutan Conservation Program. The growing threat that illegal human activities pose to orangutans and endangered wildlife living in and around GPNP is an indirect result of the poverty of the local people. The dire health needs of the people surrounding the GPNP in West Kalimantan include 25% of the children dying before the age five, mothers that often die in childbirth, and even "simple" injuries like a cut on the hand can
lead to death without access to tetanus shots or antibiotics. With HIH, local people can "pay" for their health care by working on environmentally sensitive income-generating projects, such as organic gardening, or reforestation.
Guided by a model that recognizes the intersection of human and environmental health, HIH is working to provide a long-term, sustainable solution to a crisis of human disease and environmental destruction. Dr. Webb will share pictures and stories about Health In Harmony’s impact on communities in Indonesia.
