Post-Earthquake Medicine in Haiti: Disaster Relief at a Field Hospital in Port-au-Prince
Location: University of Washington
On January 12, 2010, the nation of Haiti experienced a catastrophic earthquake that took hundreds of thousands of lives and left even more people injured and homeless. Dr. Christopher Sanford served as a medical officer on a U.S. federal disaster response team that was deployed to a field hospital in Port-au-Prince shortly after the earthquake occurred. The response team helped victims with a wide range of problems including gunshot wounds, knifings, typhoid fever, meningococcal meningitis, and active pulmonary TB. In this Hot Topics in Preparedness session, Dr. Sanford will share his experiences and reflect upon lessons learned that may have important implications for public health planning and response to major disasters.
