Erin McCarthy is a program officer in the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, leading the president’s external engagement and communications in support of the foundation’s mission. Erin also serves as the Chief of Staff to the Country Director, Nigeria, splitting her time between Seattle and Abuja.
From 2010-2012, she served on the foundation’s Philanthropic Partnerships team and was seconded to the Government Affairs team, supporting engagements with government officials, grantees, and other partners.
Prior to joining the foundation, Erin was a defense consultant to senior military and civilian intelligence leadership, supporting a range of initiatives across the global intelligence community. She began her career in Washington, DC as an appointee in the administration of President George W. Bush, serving at the Pentagon and in the Office of Political Affairs at the White House.
Erin holds an MPA from the Evans School of Public Policy & Governance at the University of Washington and a BA from Rosemont College. She serves on the Board of Directors of Inspiring Excellence, is a World Affairs Council Fellow, and a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy.
An avid traveler, she has visited more than 25 countries and enjoys scuba diving, yoga, and hiking. She is a native of Philadelphia and currently resides in Seattle with her husband Alan Adams.
