Neurotechnology: Advancing Beyond Expectations Webinar

December 5, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join MedTech Intelligence and Battelle for a webinar to learn more about unraveling the mysteries of the nervous system.

The Presenters

Gaurav Sharma, PhD Senior Research Scientist, Battelle

Gaurav’s work has helped a paralyzed patient regain control of his hand and developed nanotechnologies for engineering the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and targeting the brain. Gaurav is the lead investigator on the NeuroLife program at Battelle and has also served as the technical lead on multiple cutting-edge projects involving peripheral/spinal stimulation, brain-computer interface development and targeted drug delivery. For the last six years, he has devoted most of his time to NeuroLife® technology, a groundbreaking neural bridging technology for patients with spinal cord injuries. Beyond spinal cord injury, he sees potential benefits for stroke and traumatic brain injury patients and other types of sensory-motor rehabilitation.

Doug Weber, PhD Director, Neurotechnology Research and Development – Battelle Associate Professor, Department of Bioengineering – University of Pittsburgh

Doug has made it his life’s work to find technology solutions that can help people with nervous systems problems. He has more than 20 years of experience on the front lines of neurotechnology innovation, with a career that has resulted in eight patents (and counting) and a biotechnology startup. At Battelle, Doug is focusing on further development of Battelle NeuroLife®. He recently completed a four-year term as a Program Manager in the Biological Technologies Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), where he created and managed a portfolio of neurotechnology programs.

What You’ll Learn

In this webinar, you’ll learn about the three main capabilities for neural technology applications: assist, restore and advance. They’re assisting the body to go beyond physical limitations where biology is broken. They’re restoring the body by optimizing recovery through targeted neuroplasticity and bioelectronic medicine. And finally, they’re advancing the healthy body to perform beyond current physical and cognitive abilities.

Hear about some of the remarkable outcomes from work with the first Battelle NeuroLife® technology clinical trial patient. They will also address some of the high-level practical challenges that must be overcome to move forward. For example, how can they move this technology from lab to homes? And not everyone is willing to have some of their skull removed, so how can they make this work without brain surgery?
