Uncovering Voices, Empowering Women: The Key to Sustainable Development

May 11, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Dr. Afaf Meleis, a visiting professor in global health nursing at the UW School of Nursing, will discuss the Lancet report, Women and Health: the key for sustainable development. Sustainable development in women’s health requires women’s social, economic and environmental contributions. This will occur when women are healthy, valued, enabled and empowered to reach their full potential in all aspects of their lives, including as providers of healthcare.

Meleis is an Egyptian-American nursing scientist and educator. She was the previous Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and Director of the School’s WHO Collaborating Center for Nursing and Midwifery Leadership. In addition to authoring seminal theoretical books and articles, she is a Living Legend of the American Academy of Nursing, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and a member of the Institute of Medicine.
