On October 21st, host Lee Huntsman and Cambia Grove are pleased to welcome guest Dr. Thomas J. Lynch Jr., President and Director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Lynch will discuss how Fred Hutch is leading efforts to eradicate cancer and other life-threatening diseases like the COVID-19 pandemic. He will also discuss:

  • His top scientific priorities as the leader of Fred Hutch: precision medicine, immune modification, infectious diseases and microbiomes, and the intersection of technology and data

Bios: 

Dr. Thomas J. Lynch Jr. is a world-renowned scientist, highly respected oncologist and successful leader of National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. As president and director of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Dr. Lynch sets the strategic direction of the center, oversees centerwide initiatives and represents the Hutch’s interests to major partners and governmental bodies. He also directs the Fred Hutch/University of Washington Cancer Consortium and is principal investigator of its Cancer Center Support Grant. Before taking over as the Hutch’s sixth president in February 2020, Dr. Lynch was most recently chief scientific officer of Bristol-Myers Squibb. Prior to that he held leadership roles as CEO of Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, director of Yale Cancer Center, physician-in-chief at Yale’s Smilow Cancer Hospital, chief of hematology-oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

Lee Huntsman, PhD served as Associate Dean for scientific affairs in the UW School of Medicine from 1993 to 1996 and became Acting Provost of the University of Washington in 1996 and Provost in 1997. In November 2002, Huntsman became Interim President and then President of the University of Washington. In July 2005, Lee Huntsman was selected by Washington Governor Christine Gregoire as the first Executive Director of the Life Sciences Discovery Fund Authority, a public-private partnership intended to give life sciences research in the state a major boost. Lee served as the Executive Director until 2012.

After distinguished service in academic leadership spanning more than two decades, Lee Huntsman was named President Emeritus by the University of Washington Board of Regents in July 2004. He continues to provide leadership in a variety of scientific and policy initiatives underway at the University and in the state of Washington and as a member of various for profit and nonprofit boards.
