VillageReach is headquartered in Seattle, WA with Country Offices located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi and Mozambique.
VillageReach is seeking an Accountant for International Operations to work in our Seattle-based headquarters with primary responsibility for monthly, quarterly and year-end accounting of our country offices. An additional substantive responsibility is the preparation of USA and global payrolls.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time.
Accounting for Country Offices – Each country office transmits detailed transaction reports to HQ on a monthly basis along with supporting documentation. Under the direction of the Controller, the Accountant performs the following duties in support of Country Office accounting:
- Ensures that Country Office transactions meet the standards of GAAP-compliant fund accounting.
- Converts Country Office transactions from local currency to USD and imports into HQ accounting system.
- Provides mentorship and helps develop the capacity of Country Office financial staff to properly account for and document local and intercompany financial activity.
- Serves as an initial point of contact and primary customer service representative to Country Office financial staff, while exemplifying VillageReach’s commitment to diversity and inclusion and effective, respectful communications throughout our global organization.
- Reviews monthly Country office requests for operating cash.
- Reconciles USD and foreign currency Country Office bank accounts.
- Ensures that appropriate supporting documents for Country Offices are maintained in an organized and auditable manner, electronically and in paper form, as appropriate.
- Ensures that shared expenses are properly allocated, and that timely reconciliations are completed by Country Offices.
- Assists in development and maintenance of SOPs documenting routine operations and makes recommendations for improvements and efficiencies to existing processes.
Global Payroll Responsibilities
- Prepares and processes monthly payroll for USA staff working in Washington State and additional states.
- Prepares and/or approves global payroll for staff working outside of Country Offices in various locations outside of the USA, some of whom are paid directly by VillageReach, and some of whom are hired through local employment agencies.
- Prepares monthly payroll journal entries and reconciles payroll-related GL accounts.
- Allocates labor and fringe benefit expenses to projects based on timekeeping data.
- Monitors data in HRIS, accounting, and payroll systems and reconciles exceptions.

This position supervises the VillageReach bookkeeper.
Education & Experience
- Associate’s Degree in Accounting or related field, Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- 3+ years of multi-state payroll related experience
- 5+ years of accounting experience, with international bookkeeping preferred
- A minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles in a fund accounting (nonprofit) environment.
- Intermediate/Advanced Quickbooks desktop skills preferred.
- Experience with BenefitMall or a comparable payroll system required.
- Intermediate Excel skills required; advanced Excel skills preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- French or Portuguese fluency highly desirable.
- Demonstrated cultural competency in partnering with racial, cultural and linguistically diverse groups.
- Demonstrated understanding of challenges with working in rural, underserved and low-income context; experience living in and/or working in a low-income country a plus.
- Ability to travel to country offices in Sub-Saharan Africa on an annual or semi-annual basis.
