About the Job
Global to Local is hiring a full-time Community Health Worker (CHW) to support Somali women and families in the SeaTac/Tukwila area. Community Health Workers are trusted members of the community who provide culturally appropriate health, wellness, and social service information and assistance.
In 2021 and 2022, this role will have two primary areas of focus: assisting Somali patients at the SeaTac HealthPoint clinic with their health needs, and supporting physical activity classes for Somali women, particularly elders/seniors.
The primary responsibility of any CHW is to build and maintain trusting relationships with clients and to connect clients to the resources they need. A successful CHW loves working with people, is knowledgeable about the resources and services available in their community, and is passionate about promoting health and wellness. CHWs must also be organized, patient, treat all client information with respect and confidentiality, and be able to use databases and other software to record and manage client and service data.
What You’ll Do
Bridge the gap between communities and the health and social services systems
- Improve the quality of care by facilitating communication between clients and healthcare providers
- Educate community members about how to use health and social services systems
- Educate health and social service providers about community needs and perspectives
- Build relationships with local healthcare and social service providers
Provide direct services to clients
- Provide culturally appropriate health information and education to clients
- Educate clients on disease prevention, including vaccination/immunization
- Assist clients in self-management of chronic illnesses and medications
- Organize and/or facilitate group fitness/physical activity classes
- Conduct health related assessments and surveys
Assist clients in navigating health and social services systems
- Connect clients with healthcare services by making referrals and assisting with appointment scheduling
- Enroll clients into programs such as health insurance and public assistance
- Inform clients of and help them access community resources
Build individual and community capacity
- Help clients develop the skills and knowledge they need to maintain wellness and advocate for themselves
- Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers/interns to support program activities and become peer leaders in the community
- Record client/program data accurately and assist with program evaluation and reporting activities.
- Represent the needs of the community to G2L and our partners
- Share knowledge with team members and seek out professional development opportunities

- Proficiency in written and spoken English and Somali.

- Willing and able to educate community members on the importance of vaccination against COVID-19 and the flu
- Ability to successfully complete the WA State Department of Health CHW Training Program within one year of employment. All training time is paid.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively with a highly diverse team.
- Basic to intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word. Must be able to accurately and efficiently enter data into spreadsheets, Salesforce database, and NextGen e-medical record system (training will be provided on these systems, previous experience is not required)
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting wage rate $23 – $24 per hour

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to handle or feel; and talk and hear. This job is rated for Light work, requiring the ability to lift or move up to 20 lbs. on occasion. Close visual acuity to perform activities such as reading and viewing a computer terminal are required. This position requires frequent travel in the SeaTac/Tukwila area and may require the use of a personal vehicle.

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement
Global to Local requires all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 unless they have an approved medical or religious exemption. Being “fully vaccinated” means that an individual is at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen.
