The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is a dynamic organization at the University of Washington. Our mission is to monitor global health conditions and health systems, as well as to evaluate interventions, initiatives, and reforms. We are also building an audience of interested policymakers, researchers, donors, and other decision-makers in health who are interested in learning more about how to apply, use, and derive better evidence in global health.
IHME has an outstanding opportunity for an Editorial Coordinator to join our team. The primary purpose of this position is to support the development of high-quality publications, presentations, web content, and peer-reviewed scientific papers for IHME’s work. The individual must be mission-driven, detail-oriented, and able to complete tasks on deadline.
The Editorial Coordinator will regularly work with multidisciplinary teams on global-health-related projects. The individual in this position will be conversant with IHME house style and the Associated Press Stylebook, proficient with web content management systems, and comfortable with the language of scientific publishing, global health research terminology, and related concepts.
Web Content Maintenance
- Work in close coordination with others on the Global Engagement Team to ensure timely posting and removal of content, and help develop content that supports IHME’s research.
- In collaboration with other team members, maintain a list of published content on the IHME website.
- Oversee a system for regularly checking content that needs frequent updating, including research articles, press releases, faculty bios, project pages, and home page features.
- Assist cross-functional teams to create and maintain web content.
Editing and Fact-Checking
- Develop a command of the intellectual material and key analytic concepts that are central to IHME’s work – spanning epidemiology, biostatistics, survey methodology, health economics, demography, and social determinants.
- Edit, fact-check, and add references to written materials, including policy reports, press releases, infographics, and journal article submissions.
- Drive consistency, clarity, grammar, and syntax standards while translating complex scientific concepts into language tailored to key audiences.
- Prepare publications and citations analytics for quarterly reporting to senior management.
- Manage requests for permission to reprint or reuse IHME’s work.
- Coordinate shipping and storage of printed materials.
- Assist Scientific Editor with maintaining internal writing style guides.
- Monitor and contribute to content posted to IHME’s internal wiki to ensure relevance and accuracy.
- Support other team functions as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in journalism, communications, English, social sciences, or related field and two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and command complex, multidisciplinary material.
- Experience with web content management systems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment in collaboration with a range of individuals, including research teams, data professionals, graphic designers, and editors.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop positive relationships with colleagues from a diverse set of disciplines, expertise, and backgrounds.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
- Knowledge of science writing or publishing processes
- Familiarity with Drupal CMS
- Copyediting skills
- Experience working in global health
