ABOUT PILGRIM AFRICA
Pilgrim Africa is a Christian nonprofit with offices in Uganda and Seattle, WA. Founded in 2001 as an indigenous response to the plight of more than 1.5 million refugees living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the war-torn regions of Northern Uganda, Pilgrim Africa has grown to be an international organization with regional and national interventions in Public Health, Education and Conservation. Education efforts include a vibrant, innovative Secondary School in Soroti, Uganda, and Public Health efforts have centered on malaria control, operational research, and advocacy. Public Health efforts include multiyear partnerships with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID/CDC, and UKAID’s Department for International Development.

Job Description
Pilgrim Africa seeks a senior strategy and organizational development professional with a growth mindset and a proven track-record in strategic thought-leadership (ideally in Pilgrim Africa program areas), design and management of innovative initiatives to expand and elevate organizational reach and impact, and success in securing resources against ambitious development targets. Working directly with our international CEO and board of directors, the ideal candidate will bring leadership and guidance to all aspects of development and organizational growth, with a preference for candidates with experience in diplomatically and effectively navigating the broader international development and/or malaria landscape. The candidate will also be capable of independently designing, implementing, and overseeing annual and multiyear fundraising efforts that meet or exceed strategic plan goals.
The Executive Director will be a key member of our Executive Leadership Team, regularly interfacing with internal and external stakeholders, helping the organization grow and increase impact while maintaining program excellence.

Principal Duties
 Create, oversee, and lead all aspects of execution for an annual development plan that raises sustainable revenue from major donors, foundations, events, and continuity (sponsorship) donors.
 Supervising 1-2 administrative US-based staff, provide leadership, innovation, and drive to Pilgrim Africa’s US branding, public relations, and marketing assets, growing brand awareness and reputation among targeted constituencies.
 Work closely with the international board of directors, senior leadership (CEO, Uganda country director, Uganda marketing and program leads), and >70 staff in Uganda to deepen a culture of sustainable resource development, including developing new proactive strategies that leverage individual networks, leads, and an increased platform reach to grow business.
 Help manage a senior advisory board of international malaria experts, integrating guidance to further clarify and inform the organization’s short and long term direction and impact.
 Successfully cultivate current and convert potential high-end individual and corporate donors into robust giving relationships with Pilgrim Africa; develop and implement moves-management strategies for the cultivation and solicitation of major gifts.
 Successfully nurture relationships with major donors and actors in the malaria space, adding to Pilgrim Africa’s credibility as a thought-partner, facilitating data/knowledge exchange between partners, and proactively networking and contributing in select global fora to promote Pilgrim Africa’s work.
 Maintain complex grant-development and grant-management timelines, deploying strong writing skills to ensure Pilgrim Africa’s strategy and key messages are clearly and powerfully communicated to potential new donors.
 Coordinate an effective program of recognition, involvement, and stewardship of donors, including timely delivery of impact reports from the field.
 Help create and, where appropriate, lead vision trips to Uganda with key donors (CEO also available to lead trips).
 Deploying industry-leading email and online marketing strategies, expand Pilgrim Africa’s small but dedicated email list into a much larger fundraising base.
 Oversee the organization’s donor-facing communications via newsletters, email drives, blogs, web and social media presence.
 Provide thought-partnership to CEO, including developing more formal processes for considering/filtering new ideas and partnerships, prioritizing, monitoring, and evaluating growth efforts, and balancing nurturing existing donors/partners with efforts to expand.

Desired Skills & Qualifications
 Bachelor’s; MS, MPA, MBA, MPH or similar preferred.
 7-10 years of senior strategy, growth, and/or fundraising experience.
 Demonstrated ability to create and implement effective, agile strategies to achieve the organization’s development goals.
 Highly motivated self-starter with excellent organizational skills.
 Experience working in growth-oriented non-profit, for-profit or hybrid start-ups, with a track record of increasing annual revenues.
 Experience in international development, international business and/or global health, ideally with an understanding of the malaria research and donor landscape.
 Ability to effectively relate to a diverse set of stakeholders here in the US and in Uganda.
 Broad knowledge of fundraising principles and successful development programs in nonprofit, for-profit and hybrid organizations, with clear perspectives on risks/advantages of various approaches and the ability to manage and prioritize time accordingly.
 On an upward career trajectory as a leader, able to diplomatically represent the organization among senior leaders and stakeholders.
 Willing to work in a nimble, innovative, “start-up” culture, with flexibility for growth and also able to prioritize and manage limited resources for maximum impact.
 Knowledge of internal monitoring and tracking systems to manage growth, track strategic progress, and adaptively course correct.
 Strong track record of using data for decision making.
 Gift for “telling the story”, ideally with experience in PR, marketing, and branding.
 Able to carry the Christian mission of Pilgrim Africa forward in a secular world, such that the organization’s orientation toward love and service has profound relevance — not only to its close friends, but to all who care about equitable access to health, education, and human dignity.
 Extremely strong verbal and written communication skills.

Salary
Competitive and commensurate with experience, with bonus packages for achieving targets.
